Peer Mentor Group – September 5th, 2018

The September Peer Mentoring Group was a conversation about entrepreneurship led by our WISE Houston President Carrie Potter.  The event started with a football themed ice breaker that was quick and fun with prizes….YAY!!

The group started with introductions and as part of the introduction, the group was encouraged to share their history or interest in entrepreneurship. We had everything from someone looking to possibly start a business with a family member, to someone that has recently started a new business venture, to someone that is possibly looking at entrepreneurship after retirement. Some of the ladies came from families that owned businesses and there were a lot of good stories shared.

Carrie Potter then discussed her path to owning her own business. Carrie gave very good insight and advice into entrepreneurship.

  • Determine your risk tolerance, both in terms of time you can and are willing to commit and financially.
  • Take your idea to pen and paper.  Write down your ideas, goals, dreams.  This is a huge first step and establishes your commitment.
  • Do not be afraid to fail.  The best business lessons sometimes come from mistakes and missteps.
  • Be open to advice and help from others, but protect your ideas.
  • If you plan to operate with a partner, communicate up front about expectations.  Talk about your expectations for the business, time and resource commitment and desired outcomes.  Make sure you are on the same page.
  • More to come…

It was determined that we definitely need a Part 2 to this topic. Carrie gave us all quite a bit to think about….so we are all ready for that Part 2!
